Montecatini Terme is an ancient Spa Town sitting at the foot of the old castle in Montecatini Alto. The spas of Montecatini Terme are very renowned and possess some splendid architecture.

A national monument, it is located directly above the spring and has an ornate Romanesque façade.

For a small entrance charge one is able to spend some quiet time wandering around the gardens and the interior. There is a small bar inside to quench your thirst and some very exclusive shops to browse. During the summer months a number of musical events are staged during the day and evenings and the locals use the venue to sit at small tables playing cards, drinking the waters (free) and listening to classical music – a grand piano sits at the centre of the dome. It is a wonderfully serene experience and worth the entrance fee. If there is an evening event being held here, they close at 7pm    (car park 1 we consider to be the best location and not a long walk)

Nearby is a charming Victorian vehicular railway (Funiculare) which takes passengers in an old (but safe) original 1898 wooden carriage to the top of the hill to Montecatini Alto where there are several restaurants and cafes for you to relax and take in the very fine views of Montecatini Terme below. You can park for free at the station. The little carriage runs every half an hour and takes about ten minutes to reach the top. Departures are every 30 minutes – on the hour and ½ hour. The cost, per person return is €7. (2015) The last service before lunch is 1pm and restarts at 2.30pm.

When you arrive, there are many places to choose to eat for lunch/dinner. If you go past all the restaurants and straight up to the church you will find a very interesting church with a small museum. The views are amazing.

Well worth a visit.
